The Military of to day is a different place then I was serving and so are the policies that govern over them. Before night clubs in the areas of military bases had a rating which would tell the military man if this club was cleared by the base commander and what was expected. A 5 start club mean that the girls had regular check ups and was free from and STD’s 90% of the time. Often the Base would even provide the medical supplies to keep the girls healthy.
When a unit / ship would pull in the guys would know that there would be 1000’s of girls waiting to meet them for a night of fun at a small price. No matter where the post was in any part of the world hookers were easy to find.
Singapore was a always a bit different and things were not so much out in the open as other counties but it was still present if you knew where to go. Many clubs provided girls for the guys but a number of sailors found that just going to the normal club or disco could provide you with a local girl who would be willing to spend time with you if you were a nice guy.
The base club at Sembawang use to be a hot spot to me the local girls to party with while in town. The pubs in the area on Canberra Road would have girls brought in from as far away as Geylang to service the guys. So over time Singapore can to be known as Singawhore. While most of the girls meet by the sailors were from Thailand or Indonesia it didn’t really matter to them, they were in Singapore and that is what counted.
Local party girl came to be known and SPG’s (Singapore party girls) the name is older when it was Sarong party girls. Cheap prices was to the benefit of the sailors like then the exchange rate was 2 Sing $ to the U.S.$
In the 1980 Orchard Towers build and open for business, no I don’t know how all the club came to gather there but they did and with them came the girls. Being in the new shopping area of the country everyone ended up there and word got out about the clubs and the girls.
Guys would talk about the great times they had in Singapore and pass on to the new guys where to go and what would be there waiting for you. Places like Geylang didn’t see a lot of military guys visiting but those that did would find girls flashing their breast to get their business and this was in the day time too!
Back in the days of the party sailor nothing was said about visiting hooker, bars that had girls working in them or anything else that happen and in all reality it was expected to behave in this manner.
But not now boy! Yeah the hammer has come down on the partying. It started in Korea around the Army bases there. Lets just say things were getting way to far out of hand there. Then the U.S. government started to take a strong stand on the trafficking of people for sexual services. So policies came out to support it.
Areas where prostitution is known to take place are off limits. Yep, this includes Orchard Towers, Geylang and the other DRL’s in Singapore. If caught with a hooker, court marshal, other charges could and most likely include disobeying a direct order, conduct unbecoming, and good old Article 134 = We can cant find something else to f**k you with so we will with this one, the catch all of the UCMJ!
So how do you keep the guys away from the hookers in Singapore? I have no clue seeing how just about every night club and disco I have been to, and it’s a lot of them, have had hookers working in them. Maybe not as open as Orchard Towers but once you have been spotted by them they move in and make it know that are there if you want. Kind of tempting when you have been out to sea for 3 or 4 months up in the gulf or coming out of the sand box after 18 months of shit.
