After a night of partying at the Down under bar the bartender Peter invited Emily and I to join him there after work. It was about 12:30 am when we arriver to find this well hidden pub packed with a band playing. Having a fair mix of customers made it fun for all that was there be it a Malay, Indian, Expat or Singaporean. There is a small dance floor but dancing at the bar is welcome also (at the bar not on it) so this club is worth checking out one night if you want to find a new hang out. For the prices it cost me S$9.00 for a Heineken, sorry I can’t recall if that was a mug or bottle but I thought it was worth it what ever I got.
Arrived at 6PM and had a seat while waiting for my company to show up. Being a Friday the bar was filled with those getting off work, mostly Expat males with a few locals. I saw a few females hanging out with friends not really doing anything worth talking about. About 7PM the club was filled pretty well on the down stairs part with a good mix of people and a few hot looking girls here and there. The service was good so you didn’t have to wait long for your drink to get refilled which is always a good sign. Over all it was a good time! Beers during happy hour are S$5.00 per glass and S$18.00 for a jug but after that they jump up to S$10.00 and S$36.00 after 9 PM so if you get in there late have plenty of cash on hand. Up stairs you’ll find plenty of seats, pool table and a stocked bar to serve you from. This area offers you a place to hang out while talking with a friend that is a lot quitter then the lower floor.
Arrived after 9PM and had to pay S$10.00 to get in which wasn’t bad since it paid for my first drink. The club was packed full so no seating down in this place but then again who would want to? Lots of hot looking ladies dressed to kill. Moved around the club checking things out which was a task in it’s self but it gave me a chance to see everyone that was there. Hit the club that is connected next door which is totally opposite from the other club. More lay back and a lot less crowed. The up side is that here you can at least sit down and talk with your date or the girl you just met next door. The cover at the door is good for both clubs so that was pretty good. Well worth checking these too clubs out!
I when by this pub about 9:30 pm on a Sunday to find it pretty nice over all, there was a bunch of guys playing pool on the upper lever that looked pretty interesting. On the lower lever where the bar it you’ll find about 8 tall tables where you can sit and enjoy the tunes or belly up to the bar if that is you style. The prices were pretty good with a mug of Tiger draft costing you only S$6.00 or S$7.00 for a Baileys on the rocks. This must be an old club judging by the disco lights that are in the ceiling area where the tables now are. Kind of out of the way but if you live in the area you may want to drop by and check this pub out some time.
Up-date: 5 Jan 2005, Renamed to the OZ and under new management. The bar is still a great place to grab a drink and hang out be it in the day or night.
Stopped this club to check it out after hearing about it from some one else. For a hotel lounge the setting is well done with a big screen TV that can be observed from any location in the club and live bands. (None were playing while I was there) a very long drink list will give you some ideal of the fun that could be had in the lounge. Prices were not as bad as I thought they would be but still higher then the pub out side, S$12 for a pint of Heineken but still a pretty good deal I thought.
Located next to the river this club offers something different for the Boat Quay stretch of bars. Set away from the thumping of the techno clubs and a walk to the jazz club this club offers you a place to sit back and really relax with friends to some soft tones that will not blow out of your chair. Located on a corner it has a nice open feeling which is a nice touch unlike the other in the area. Spacious seating means you are getting bumped into every time some one walks by and can enjoy your time there. This club opened in October / November 2002 and seams to be doing well so far. Highly recommended to visit and check this new club out by all means. It’s not for the younger group but I’m sure all are welcome. A very friendly staff will server you and make you night enjoyable. Update29 Sept 2003: This clubs has really taken off with the Expat crowd in the pass few months. Now it is standing room only that flows out into the walk ways around the small bar making it a great place to make new friends.
One of the many Karaoke Pubs on the street but a pretty nice place with a pool table that is free on Sundays. Prices were reasonable for pitcher of beer, sorry I don’t recall the price, but I remembered it was worth going back so it must have been pretty good. The club has a nice set up in side with seating for about 30 or so on bar stools. The staff is friendly and happy to server you. I stopped by on a Sunday night in November about 9 pm to find a few customer hanging around during happy hour and checking out the Chinese songs. Update - June 2005 / April 2006 - Looking to meet a girl from Vietnam? this is just one of the many places on Joo Chiat where you dreams can come true!
I happen to stop in this club because the happy hour prices were worth me checking out the place plus I needed a beer. A small cozy place with a nice set up and helpfully staff. It was early when I stopped in so that may have been why it was so quiet that night but well worth going back to some time if I’m in the area. Update - Feb 2008 - The club has been remolded and is now more like a Chinese KTV pub.
I didn’t eat here but enjoys the bar which is located down stairs from the restaurant which serves a French casein in privet seating area so you can enjoy you evening with your date. In the bar area which is small and has seating out side I found it very relaxing, the inside bar that is. It’s a nice place to sit back and wait if you are planning to eat up stairs or just want to get a way some place that is off the beaten track.
This is one of the friendliest bars I have been in while in Singapore. This old club which is located close to the PSA Terminals and Navy Regional Contracting base at Wharfs Gate which is up on the north of the island and it truly nautilus feel with all the old ship items you’ll find inside. Catering mostly to the merchants that pull in it also has a following of locals too that stop by to play pool or darts. Good food and cold beer has made this one of my regularly visited bars. Service is outstanding all the time and the staff is never pushy to get you to have another drink. The down side is that it closes at midnight after opening at 5 pm but that is more than enough time to enjoy the company of this bar. |
